Designing the Virus

‘Designing the Virus’ brings together my ongoing research across histories of science and design in two specific areas: practices visualizing viruses for both scientific public communication; response to risk. In 2020, these areas intersected a way that was impossible, as researcher, ignore, when medical illustration coronavirus released by United States Centers Disease Control Prevention (CDC) took on life no previous image has done, frequently cut-and-pasted, remixed, broadcast signal not only danger posed virus, but pandemic itself. By summer ‘spiky blob’ had grown prevalent visual culture numerous countries globe. This essay, written August 2020 part ‘timestamp’ period, questions what it means biomedical become an icon global crisis. I analyse from interdisciplinary angles history graphic health communication image-making practices, draw upon published interviews with CDC’s illustrators, build recent disaster studies critiques notion ‘natural disaster’.
